Panama and Guatemala meet in Austin on Friday, with the victors virtually assured of a place in the last eight of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Panama produced a dominant performance to thrash Guadeloupe 5-2 in their opening game. The damage was done in the first quarter of the game, as Panama raced into a 4-0 lead thanks to two strikes from Ismael Díaz, plus further goals from Cristian Martínez and Eduardo Guerrero.
Guatemala produced a rock solid defensive display in their opening game, as they upset Jamaica 0-1 in Carson. Oscar Santis scored the only goal of the contest, firing home from just inside the area following some fine work from Darwin Lom. The Reggae Boys through everything into attack in the second half, but the Guatemalans refused to cave in and fully deserved their three points.
