The Golden State Valkyries will have a chance to send shockwaves throughout the WNBA if they can overcome the odds and record a win over the defending champions, the New York Liberty, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. Fans can follow the action once the game gets underway at 7 p.m. EST.
A little over a week ago, when the Valkyries lost their regular-season opener to Phoenix by 17 points (84-67), being competitive with the Liberty in a couple of weeks was not viewed as possible. But then Golden State recorded its first win, 76-74, over Washington and followed it up with another, this time 82-73 over the Sparks. Now, Washington and LA are not exactly powerhouses. But, at least for now, from a statistical perspective, Golden State has the third-best defense in the WNBA (77 points per game allowed). That defense will need to perform accordingly if the Valkyries are to have even a remote chance of winning against the spread, let alone outright.
New York appears to have picked up where they left off after winning the WNBA Championship last year. They controlled their opener vs. Las Vegas, crushed Chicago, and held on to beat a very good Indiana team.

I am inclined to think there is a chance the Valkyries might slow down the Liberty offensive machine in this game. However, while they may keep New York from scoring 90+ points, the Liberty defense will probably keep their paltry offense from scoring in the 70s. That being said, I can’t bring myself to give 17.5 points here. New York will probably cover, but I’ve more faith in the Total.
