Stage 5 of the Giro di Italia 2025 this Wednesday, May 14, with 151 km on the menu between Ceglie Messapica and Matera. A short, nervy route that could prove a favorite with puncheurs or sprinters who appreciate hilly terrain.

For this 2nd day of racing in Italy, riders will be treated to a winding route where the last 35 km will give way to the climbs of Montescaglioso (2.8 km at 8.6%) and Castello Tramontano (7.1 km at 3.5%), before a 10% ramp and a final short climb in the last 3 km. A tough finish where only the strongest will be able to compete.

In this context, it's hard not to mention Mads Pedersen once again! The Dane won two of the first three stages of this Giro, but seemed to run out of steam in the sprint to Lecce on Tuesday. Will the Lidl-Trek rider have recovered?

Other riders will be on the lookout, including Kaden Groves! Ranking 5th on Tuesday, the Alpecin-Deceuninck rider is very good over the bumps and is very powerful, which is an advantage in this final stage of the race. With his team able to put him in good conditions, the Australian should be one of the riders to watch in this 5th stage of the Giro d'Italia.

Although in inconsistent form at the start of the Giro and even since the start of the season, don't forget Wout van Aert. The Belgian rider was able to rest on Tuesday and could be in much better shape after several days of racing and more rhythm in his legs.
