Gilbert Burns (22-9-0) will face Mike Malott (13-2-1) in a welterweight bout for the main event in this weekend’s UFC event in Winnipeg, Canada. The fight will feature two fighters heading in different directions at this point in their careers.
The 39-year-old veteran, Gilbert Burns, is currently on a 4-fight losing streak, and rumors of retirement have begun to swirl. Back in 2022, he gave Khamzat Chimaev his toughest fight but lost via decision. From there, he picked up back-to-back wins over Neil Magny and Jorge Masvidal, and many thought his career was on an upward trajectory once again. Belal, Maddalena, Brady, and Morales have all picked up wins over Burns since May of 2023. Snapping that losing streak will not be easy against his opponent on Saturday.
Mike Malott has had a tremendous UFC career to date. He came in and submitted Shimon Smotritsky back in late 2021. From that point, he picked up 6 more wins and just 1 loss. It was impressive to see him bounce back from a KO/TKO loss to Neil Magny by rattling off 3 straight wins over Trevin Giles, Charles Radtke, and, most recently, Kevin Holland.
Malott is in a great spot to pick up yet another win over a UFC veteran and make his way into the top 15 of the division. For Burns, a loss here and he will tumble out of the rankings.

Malott has an incredible opportunity here to finally break into the top 15 of the welterweight division. Against someone with a better recent stretch will give us pause but Burns has just simply not looked like he has better days ahead of him. We like Malott to get the finish by will be playing him to just to win in the rare case it does come via decision.
