The first semi final of the UEFA Nations League sees Germany take on Portugal in Munich on Wednesday evening. Both sides had to come through thrilling, but highly contrasting, two-legged quarter endings to book their place in the last four. Germany looked to be cruising after winning their away leg against Italy 2-1 and racing into a 3-0 half time lead in the second leg. However, the Azzurri staged a stirring second half fightback to reduce the deficit from 5-1 to 5-4, leaving the Germans clinging on for the final few minutes.
Portugal needed extra time to overcome Denmark in their quarter final. After losing the first leg 1-0 in Copenhagen, Roberto Mancini's men needed a late second leg strike from Sporting Lisbon winger Trincão to force the tie into extra time, where further goals from Trincão and substitute Goncalo Ramos saw Portugal home 5-3 on aggregate.

Surprisingly, Wednesday night's game will be Germany's first ever in the last four of the Nations League, but they will come into the tie full of confidence following an excellent last 12 months. Since losing 2-1 to Spain in the quarter finals of Euro 2024, the Germans have bounced back to put together an eight game unbeaten run in the Nations League. That run has included huge wins over Hungary (5-0) and Bosnia & Herzegovina (7-0), plus an impressive 1-0 success at home to a very strong Dutch side.
Portugal aiming for their second title
Portugal were the inaugural Nations League winners in 2019, but since that success, they have flattered to disappoint in major competitions. However, since their limp exit to France at Euro 2024, Portugal have produced a string of fine performances in the Nations League. They comfortably topped a qualification group featuring Scotland, Poland and Croatia, before showing their resilience to battle past Denmark in the last eight.

Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann will be without star midfielder Jamal Musiala and key defender Antonio Rudiger for Wednesday night's game.
