Fresh off a quarterfinal run in Madrid, Gabriel Diallo aims for another prolific campaign at the Italian Open as he begins his campaign in Rome on Thursday against ATP veteran Marcos Giron of the United States.
Diallo enters the fray in Rome brimming with confidence following his first quarterfinal appearance in an ATP-1000 event at the 2025 Madrid Masters. The Canadian lost to Borna Coric of Croatia 6-3 7-6(6) in the final qualifying match but made the most of his second chance as a lucky loser, pulling off victories over Zizou Bergs 6-1 6-2, Kamil Majchrzak 7-5 4-6 6-4, Cameron Norrie 2-6 6-4 6-4 and Grigor Dimitrov 5-7 7-6(7) 6-4 before bowing to Lorenzo Musetti 4-6, 3-6 in the round of 8.
Giron has lost four of his last five matches, including a 3-6, 1-6 loss to Aleksandar Vukic of Australia in the first round of the 2025 Estoril Challenger. In Madrid, Giron managed to squeak past Learner Tien 6-1 1-6 7-6(4) in the first round before falling to Matteo Berrettini 6-7(3) 7-6(6) 6-1 in the next round.
