After coming agonizingly close to a Champions League place last season, Freiburg begin the new campaign with a home match against Augsburg on Saturday afternoon. Going into their final game, Freiburg were in pole position to secure a top-four spot and their first ever Champions League appearance. However, a home defeat to Frankfurt allowed Dortmund to leapfrog them into the final qualification place. Head coach Julian Schuster will be hoping that his team suffers no ill effects from that disappointment and can start the new season on a high.
As for Augsburg, four consecutive defeats saw them finish the 2024-25 season in 12th place. Whilst that was a largely satisfactory finishing position, new manager Sandro Wagner will be hopeful of securing a top half finish this time around, as he takes on his first major managerial role.
