Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina targets a possible first ATP 1000 final appearance on Friday as he tussles up against Casper Ruud of Norway in the semifinal of the 2025 Madrid Masters.
Cerundolo added another chapter to his amazing run in Madrid as the Argentine gutted out a 3-6 7-6(5) 6-2 win over Czech rising star Jakub Mensik on Thursday. Down by a set, Cerundolo rose up from the brink of elimination by showcasing incredible mental strength to outduel Mensik in the second-set tiebreaker. The Argentine began to put more pressure on the young Czech until the latter eventually self-destructed. Cerundolo gave up only one service break the entire match while collecting 42 points off the first serves.
Ruud advanced to his first clay-court semifinal after sweeping Daniil Medvedev 6-3 7-5. The Norwegian put on another serving clinic, holding 100 percent of his serves while capturing 31 points off his first serves. Ruud scored two breakpoint conversions to extend his streak of straight-set wins to four matches.
