Tiafoe, who is on four-match losing streak, is listed at -185 against the +150 underdog Hanfmann, who has won his last three matches and six of his last seven.

Tiafoe has lost his last four matches and five of his last seven. After falling to Jan-Lennard Struff in the third round of the 2025 US Open 4-6, 3-6, 6-7, the American dropped his two men’s singles matches at the Davis Cup, losing to Jiri Lehecka 3-6, 2-6 and Jakub Mensik 1-6, 4-6. Poor form continued to haunt Tiafoe in Asia as the American lost his opening match against Marton Fucsovics 6-3, 1-6, 5-7 at the Tokyo Open. Tiafoe is 13-12 on the hard court and 26-22 on the 2025 ATP season.

Hanfmann outgunned No.44 seed Lorenzo Sonego 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 to secure his spot in the second round in Shanghai. Ranked No.159 in the world, Hanfmann won 61 percent of his first serves and captured four crucial service breaks, two of which scored in the deciding set. Hanfmann, who had to beat Shintaro Mochizuki 6-3, 7-5 and Jason Murray Kubler 6-2, 6-3 to qualify for the main draw, has now won six of his last seven matches as he had also reached the semifinal of the Jingshan Challenger a week ago.
