It’s time for Les Bleus to kick off the knockout stage of the 2026 World Cup! In the Round of 16, France will face Sweden this Tuesday at MetLife Stadium. As one of the top favorites to win the title, the French national team lived up to its status during the group stage. It had no trouble whatsoever finishing at the top of Group I, which included Senegal and Norway, among others. We expect Didier Deschamps’ team to keep the momentum going.
Having qualified for this World Cup at the very last minute, Sweden must already be very happy to have reached the Round of 16. The Blågult didn’t exactly shine in Group F. In particular, they suffered a heavy defeat against the Netherlands (5-1). With 4 points earned, Graham Potter’s men still managed to qualify as one of the best third-place teams. The task ahead could now prove far too daunting for the Swedish team against one of the heavyweights of this World Cup.

France - Sweden: Form Analysis

As one of the top favorites in this World Cup, France lived up to expectations during the group stage. They're one of the most solid teams so far in the tournament. Les Bleus had no trouble at all finishing at the top of Group I. They got off to a fantastic start by defeating Senegal (3-1).
Didier Deschamps’ team didn’t let up against Iraq, securing a comfortable victory despite a halftime break of more than two hours due to thunderstorms (3-0). France was then playing for first place on the final matchday. Facing a completely revamped Norwegian squad, they didn’t falter. Les Bleus managed to secure another victory to boost their confidence ahead of the Round of 16 (1-4).
Les Bleus went undefeated during the group stage of this World Cup.
After a very difficult qualifying campaign, Sweden still managed to make it to the playoffs to keep its World Cup hopes alive. Victories over Ukraine (1-3) and Poland (3-2) secured the team’s spot in the tournament.
In Group F, the Blågult kicked off with a resounding victory over Tunisia (5-1). However, they struggled afterward, suffering a heavy defeat against the Netherlands (5-1). Graham Potter’s team concluded the group stage with a draw against Japan (1-1). Those 4 points allowed them to finish among the top third-place teams and remain in contention for the World Cup.

France & Sweden Squad Analysis
Ahead of the knockout stage of this World Cup, the French national team’s key players have gained a boost of confidence. In the last match against Norway, Mike Maignan stood out by saving a penalty kick. After getting some rest, William Saliba will return to his spot alongside Dayot Upamecano in the center of the defense.
Even though Manu Koné has had two strong games in midfield, Didier Deschamps might opt to start with Aurélien Tchouaméni and Adrien Rabiot in the midfield. France’s attacking stars have made a strong impression throughout the group stage. In addition to Michael Olise, who continues to dish out assist after assist, and Kylian Mbappé, who remains as effective as ever, Ousmane Dembélé just scored a hat trick against Norway. He already has four goals in this World Cup.
Ousmane Dembélé just scored a hat trick against Norway.
After conceding 5 goals against the Netherlands, Kristoffer Nordfeldt lost his starting spot in goal for Sweden’s final group stage match. Jacob Widell Zetterström, the Derby County goalkeeper, was chosen over him. The Blågult also suffered a major setback against Japan. After being forced to leave the game due to injury, Isak Hien is out for the remainder of the World Cup. Victor Lindelöf will therefore almost certainly return to central defense, having started in midfield in the previous match.
Yasin Ayari, who scored two goals on Matchday 1 against Tunisia, remains a key player in Sweden’s midfield. Graham Potter also has several talented options up front. In addition to Viktor Gyökeres and Alexander Isak, we should see Anthony Elanga in action, as he has been on a scoring streak in the last two matches.

Our France vs Sweden Prediction
Les Bleus enter this World Cup Round of 16 match as heavy favorites. They’ve racked up a string of wins during the group stage and have no intention of letting up as they take on Sweden. Despite earning 4 points in Group F, the Blågult haven’t exactly impressed in their World Cup debut. In particular, they suffered a heavy defeat against the Netherlands (5-1). Graham Potter’s men are unlikely to be a match for one of the favorites to win the title.
