Having failed to make the showpiece event, both the French and the English will try to console themselves by winning the third-place playoff on Saturday. The two losing semi-finalists will clash in Miami, Florida.
Just a few days ago, the French were regarded as the ones to beat at this World Cup, but Didier Deschamps’ men faltered at the semi-final hurdle, losing in uncharacteristically tame style, coming up massively short against a dominant and deadly Spanish team. For the Three Lions, a place in the final loomed large, especially when Anthony Gordon put them a goal ahead early in the second half, but thanks to an overly defensive approach, they too failed to get over the line.
Off the back of being far too negative during the latter parts of that semi-final, the English should be looking to get on the front foot here, and they really should have the tools to hurt a French defense that once finally tested in that semi-final, looked dodgy. A bet on ‘England to Score Over 1.5 Goals’ appeals.

France - England: Form Analysis
For much of the tournament, Les Bleus appeared to be going all the way to the final. They’d brushed teams aside thanks to their swift offensive approach, and given that Didier Deschamps clearly had lots of final-third options, the French were fancied to beat anyone. After making light work of beating Morocco, though, they couldn’t raise their game against the Spanish. Struggling massively to keep hold of the ball, they were unable to counter with the same power that they’d delivered throughout the tournament. Can they now bounce back against the English?

We cannot say quite the same thing for the English, who didn’t exactly go through the tournament dazzling in the same way as the French, but they too had shown lots of offensive quality, especially in the knockouts, scoring six goals in three games prior to the semi-finals. When Anthony Gordon steered home a Reece James’ cross against Argentina, Thomas Tuchel’s men looked set to face the Spanish in the final, but they swiftly changed approach, dropped very deep and could not hold off wave after wave of Argentine pressure, eventually conceding two late goals. They too need to bounce back.

France & England Squad Analysis
For the first time at this tournament, we could see Didier Deschamps make several chances. William Saliba has been ruled out with a back issue after being forced off against the Spanish. He is expected to be replaced by Maxence Lacroix. Desire Doue is also expected to come into the starting XI, while we could also see the likes of Manu Kanu, Rayan Cherki and Theo Hernandez start.

Will Thomas Tuchel shuffle the pack ahead of this third-place playoff? Probably. The likes of Marcus Rashford, Eberechi Eze and Bukayo Saka could all get more game time here, while Nico O’Reilly also looks likely to regain his starting place. After putting in lots of hard work throughout the competition, Jude Bellingham and Declan Rice could be rested, while the same can be said for Elliot Anderson, who may make way for Kobbie Mainoo.

Our France vs England Prediction
The early market is heavily favoring the French, but let’s face it, they fell apart rather tamely against the Spanish, especially at the back, while they had previously looked like a team that would be there for the taking on the break. Despite their failings against Argentina, the Three Lions have lots of counter-offensive quality, and they’ll also have the luxury of facing a French defense that does not contain William Saliba, so don’t be too surprised if we see English goals in this game.
Our France vs England Pick: England to Score Over 1.5 Goals.
