Fluminense remains the only non-European team competing in the Club World Cup, two wins away from unprecedented glory. The first of these would have to be won against Chelsea, who had already lost 3-1 to fellow Rio de Janeiro side Flamengo earlier in the competition.
However, that was Chelsea's only defeat of the tournament, as well as the only time they trailed. Maresca's team advanced to the most accessible part of the draw heading into the final, avoiding other UEFA heavyweights. In the quarterfinals, with Palmer's best performance of the tournament, the Blues beat another Brazilian team, Palmeiras, albeit with a fortuitous own goal. However, the statistics for that match show that Palmeiras barely managed to trouble Sánchez, the Chelsea goalkeeper.
But Fluminense, a team made up of several veterans, including well-known center back Thiago Silva, already challenged bettors when they paid +440 odds for their victory in the round of 16 against Inter, the Champions League runner-up, whom the Rio de Janeiro team beat 2-0.

Fluminense - Chelsea: Form Analysis
In the betting circles, Fluminense started out as the underdog of the four Brazilian teams to achieve glory. This is due mainly to their marked veteran defensive line, which, however, proved to be a strength in this tournament, as they kept a clean sheet three times in the Club World Cup.
Fluminense thus tied their five-match unbeaten run in the Club World Cup with their previous record, which spanned league and cup competitions in Brazil. Therefore, they would have to go back to May 11th to find the last time they lost, which was also the last time they conceded three or more goals.
Meanwhile, Chelsea earned decent results in the group stage. Against Los Angeles FC in Atlanta, they showed defensive sloppiness that was accentuated in their defeat against Flamengo. They beat the Tunisian club, and in the knockout stage, Chelsea won in extra time against Benfica, defeating Palmeiras with a goal in the remaining 10 minutes.

Experience is one of Fluminense's most striking characteristics, starting with Fabio, the 44-year-old goalkeeper who made three saves in their victory against Hilal and who kept a clean sheet against Inter. In defense, Thiago Silva and Samuel Xavier are each over 35 years old, although the latter is speculated to play further up the line in a five-man midfield, and Ignacio and Freytes will partner Thiago Silva in defense, as they did against the Saudi club.
In the head-to-head qualifiers, Fluminense was greatly helped off the bench by Hercules, but the 24-year-old striker is still expected to start off the bench against Chelsea.
Chelsea, meanwhile, is carrying forward Liam Delap and Levi Colwill, who are suspended for accumulated yellow cards. Joao Pedro is therefore almost certainly expected to start in attack. Chelsea's arguably best player at the Club World Cup has been Neto, who will start against Fluminense on Tuesday.
