Rangers reached the quarterfinals of the previous Europa League. But since that elimination at the hands of Athletic Club, the Scottish side has declined alarmingly. They have lost four of their five Europa League matches this season. Their chances of progressing to the next round are slim. Of course, if they want to achieve the feat of reaching the quarterfinals, they will have to start by beating Hungarian side Ferencvaros on Thursday.
However, the match appears challenging as Ferencváros, currently ranked sixth in the group and enjoying a strong start to their Europa League campaign, is aiming for a top-eight finish. After drawing in Istanbul against Fenerbahce, the Hungarian champions won their subsequent three league matches and will be the overwhelming favorites to beat Rangers on Thursday at the Groupama Arena.
For now, at least, it seems to be the first time in a long time that Ferencváros has managed to translate their domestic success to European competitions. In Hungary, after 31 matchdays, they lead the league with 31 points; they have won the Hungarian league title seven times consecutively since 2015/2016.
