Two-time reigning Austrian Bundesliga champions Sturm Graz, who are second this season with 12 points from six matches, are starting a new Europa League campaign. This comes after a frustrating defeat in Norway to Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League qualifying round, where they were thrashed 5-0, sealing the tie, and where Sturm Graz conceded three goals before the 25th minute.
Sturm Graz's recent dominance in Austrian football has so far failed to translate into European competitions. Last season, when they did play in the Champions League, they finished 30th in the 36-team table with six points from eight matches. When they traveled to Bergamo, they suffered a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Atalanta.
At least Sturm Graz will travel to Denmark, to the MCH Arena, having previously beaten their archrivals in the Austrian Bundesliga, Salzburg, 2-0 at the Red Bull Arena with goals from Hovart and Jatta. There, they used an atypical 4-1-2-1-2 formation, with Slovenian Hovart shining in midfield, as did Gorenc Stankovic.
