A spot in the UEFA Champions League playoff round is on the line as Denmark’s FC Copenhagen hosts Sweden’s Malmö FF in the second leg of their third qualifying round tie. The first leg, played in Malmö last week, was a tense and evenly matched affair that ended in a 0-0 draw. That stalemate means everything is up for grabs in the return leg at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen.
FC Copenhagen will be cautiously optimistic coming home with the tie level, knowing a win on the night in front of their fans would see them through. Domestically, Copenhagen have started their 2025-26 season in solid form. As the reigning Danish Superliga champions, they carry high expectations; early in their new league campaign they’ve notched a couple of wins and looked defensively sound.
Copenhagen also have a strong recent history in European qualifiers – around this stage last season they successfully navigated tough opponents to reach the Champions League group stage, and that experience could serve them well now.
Malmö FF, on the other hand, are in the middle of their domestic season (the Allsvenskan runs through summer/fall) and have been one of the top teams in Sweden this year. They entered this Champions League qualifying path as Swedish champions and already had to battle through earlier rounds.
In the previous round, Malmö impressively eliminated Latvia’s FK RFS, including a high-scoring away leg that showcased their attacking potential. However, against Copenhagen’s higher caliber defense, Malmö found it harder to break through in the first meeting. Still, Malmö will not be discouraged – they managed to keep a clean sheet at home and have generally been in good form, with a resilient defense of their own.
In Allsvenskan play, Malmö have been near the top of the table, boasting one of the best goal differentials in their league. They come into this second leg knowing an early away goal could flip the script and put pressure on Copenhagen.
