It’s the headline matchup of Matchday 2 in Group D at the Women’s Euro. This Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. EST, England takes on the Netherlands at Letzigrund Stadion in Zurich.
The defending champions from England had a rough start to their title defense. Last Saturday, they were beaten 2–1 by France. Despite a late push and a goal from Keira Walsh to cut the deficit, the Lionesses were outplayed for much of the match. It was Sarina Wiegman’s first loss in a European Championship game, a surprising setback for a coach who had previously led both the Netherlands and England to Euro titles. Her squad now faces a must-win situation in their second group-stage match in Switzerland.
But it won’t be easy. Standing in their way are the Netherlands, one of the top contenders in this tournament. Andries Jonker’s team lived up to expectations in their opener, cruising past Wales with a 3–0 win. It was a strong performance that saw Vivianne Miedema get on the scoresheet and Daniëlle van de Donk deliver two assists. The Dutch will be looking to deal a major blow to the reigning champions and potentially eliminate them before the final group match.
