Old foes England and Argentina will clash on Tuesday, when both teams will be hoping to reach the final of the 2026 World Cup. Can the holders make it three finals out of the last four? Will the English reach a first World Cup final since that glorious day in 1966? We’ll find out in Atlanta, Georgia.
It wasn’t easy, and it wasn’t exactly pretty, but the Three Lions roared loud enough to see off the Norwegians in the quarter-finals, winning courtesy of an extra-time finish from Jude Bellingham, who netted his sixth goal of the campaign. Thomas Tuchel’s men have shown lots of fight and determination, but they may need to up their overall game to get the better of a team that is more experienced in terms of getting over the line in huge games of this nature.
As the holders, the Argentinians will definitely fancy themselves to get the job done in Atlanta, but they’ve looked very shaky at the back, so if they are to go, it probably won’t be in low-scoring fashion. Both teams have shown enough to suggest that there’ll be no clean sheet at either end on Tuesday, so much so that ‘Both Teams to Score’ rates as a solid pick at odds of -105.

England - Argentina: Form Analysis
Have the Three Lions played the best soccer at this World Cup? Probably not. Have they blown teams away in a manner that suggests their elusive second title is on the way? Not really. However, what Thomas Tuchel’s men have done is show no shortage of passion, fight and desire, so much so that they’re more than worthy of their place in the final four.
We know that this England team has the individual quality to hurt even the best teams. Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham are two of the most high-profile players on the planet for a reason, but it was always going to be about whether Tuchel could create a team that would really scrap and get over the line in tough games. It appears that he’s achieved that.
Having shown a great mix of offensive quality and the desire to win against both Mexico and Norway, the English are definitely ready for this test against the world champions, who’ve certainly wobbled at times over the last few weeks.

Is this the same Argentina team that lifted the trophy in 2022? In terms of personnel, pretty much, but in terms of quality, not really. Despite being the holders, the Argentinians have not dazzled the crowds at this tournament. Sure, the magical Lionel Messi has continued to produce brilliant moments that only he can conjure, but on the whole, this looks like a team in decline.
When you have the likes of Lionel Messi, Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez in your team, you’re never going to struggle to score goals, so it’s no surprise that Lionel Scaloni’s men come into this semi-final clash having scored 18 goals in six games, notching multiple goals in six out of six, but at the back, they’ve been appalling.
In each of their three knockout games, the Argentinians have looked all over the place defensively, conceding five goals in those three games. Frankly, their defensive efforts suggest that they could struggle in Atlanta.

England & Argentina Squad Analysis
England boss Thomas Tuchel isn’t expected to make major changes ahead of this game, though he has made a habit of quite regularly switching up his options on the flanks, so we cannot be sure that Noni Madueke and Anthony Gordon, who started out wide during the previous game, will be continue in the lineup here.
Bukaya Saka came on at half time against Norway, plus he was very effective when starting against Mexico, assisting the opening goal in that game. He may return to starting XI ahead of Tuesday’s game.

Lionel Scaloni seems quite comfortable with his starting XI, so we shouldn't expect many changes from the Argentinians. Lautaro Martinez has had to settle for a role on the bench in the last two games, with Julian Alavarez preferred up top.
The tried-and-tested midfield four of Rodrigo de Paul, Enzo Fernadez, Alexis Mac Allister and Leandro Parades is expected to be unchanged.

Our England vs Argentina Prediction
If we really think about it, it’s impossible to conclude that either team has done anything remotely impressive in a defensive sense since the knockout stages began. The English have conceded against DR Congo, Mexico and Norway, while the Argentinians have shipped goals against Cape Verde, Egypt and Switzerland.
In other words, both offensive lineups should be excited to get going in Atlanta. Everything we’ve seen from the two so far suggests that this will be a game with more scoring chances for each team than the early odds would have us believe, leaving ‘Both Teams to Score’ to go down as a value bet all the time odds of -105 are on offer. Odds of -125 would be much fairer.
