Emma Navarro of the United States is listed at -250 ahead of her rematch with Zhang Shuai of China (+200) in the first round of the 2025 Wuhan Open.
Current Form:
Fresh off a quarterfinal run in Beijing, Navarro guns for another prolific run in Wuhan, which serves as the final big tournament on the calendar before the WTA Tour Finals. Navarro has won five of her last seven matches, including three consecutive wins to reach the quarterfinals of the China Open. In that tournament, the American secured her first career win over former world’s No.1 and reigning Wimbledon Open champion Iga Swiatek 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 in the round of 16. She eventually lost to Jessica Pegula 7-6, 2-6, 1-6 in the quarterfinals, but it was nevertheless an encouraging tournament for the former world’s No.10.
Ranked 142nd in the world, Zhang picked up wins over Anastasia Zakharova 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 and fellow Chinese Xinyu Wang 6-4, 6-2 before succumbing to the eventual champion, Amanda Ansimova in the round of 32. Zhang has compiled a 17-5 record on the hard court this year, though most of these wins were earned from Challenger-level tournaments.

Our Emma Navarro vs Shuai Zhang Prediction
Navarro gets the opportunity to avenge her previous loss to Zhang (4-6, 2-6) in last year’s China Open. Navarro is starting to play again at a high level, having won five of her last seven matches. Her upset win over Iga Swiatek in the fourth-round of the China Open reflects Navarro’s surging form. But Zhang is not a pushover. The Chinese gave Anisimova all sorts of headaches in the opening set of their match in Beijing before crumbling apart in the second set. With a predominantly Chinese crowd expected to cheer on their countryman, Zhang still presents a certain degree of danger to Navarro in this match.
Fearless Forecast: Navarro will gut out 7-6, 6-4 win over Zhang, beating the -3.5-game spread (-150). Navarro is valued as high as +220 on a -6.5-game handicap, but I don’t think she can win by that many games against Zhang, who is still a very competitive player at the age of 36. The payout may be modest ($100 profit per $150 bet), but it’s a safe pick nevertheless.
Our betting prediction for Emma Navarro vs. Zhang Shuai: Emma Navarro will cover -3.5 Games.
