On Friday afternoon, at the WTA event in Miami, Elise Mertens, who comes off the back of that defeat to Coco Gauff at the WTA Indian Wells last week, will take on Taylor Townsend. On the face of it, facing a lower ranked player, this looks like a nice opportunity for Mertens to begin her tournament in simple fashion, but Townsend comes into this game in fine form and could be a tougher opponent than the rankings and the early lines suggest.

However, she's not exactly been in fluent form of late, losing three of her last five matches, including against a player ranked much lower than her. Moreover, Townsend is a player on an upward curve right now, coming off the back of two nice qualifying wins in Miami, before winning her first-round match against a higher-ranked player in Bronzetti. Such form should hold her in good stead here, while Mertens hasn't played competitively in seven days and is coming off the back of a loss.
