Elina Svitolina of Ukraine will tussle with Beatriz Haddad Maia of Brazil for a place in the quarterfinal of the 2025 Bad Homburg Open on Wednesday.
Svitolina shook off rustiness in the early goings to defeat 2025 Libema Open champion Elise Mertens of Belgium in straight sets 7-5 6-4. After reaching the quarterfinal of the French Open, Svitolina had taken three weeks off from the tour to get her in top shape for the grass court season. The move apparently paid off as Svitolina had enough gas in the tank to outlast Mertens in a tough two-set win. The Ukrainian improved her grass court record to 27-24.
Haddad Maia got back into the winner’s circle with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Ashlyn Krueger of the United States. The Brazilian landed 76 percent of her first serves, winning 30 points on her first serves and conceding only one service break. Haddad Maia recorded only her second grass-court win in 2025 and hiked her record to 8-18 overall this year.
