Madison Keys of the United States begins her bid for a second Grand Slam title as she plays Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania in the first round of the Wimbledon Open on Monday at the All-England Club.
Keys had gone 2-2 in four grass-court matches ahead of the Wimbledon Open. Keys, the reigning Australian Open champion, earned wins over Russians Anastasia Zakharova 6-3 6-2 and Diana Shnaider 2-6 6-3 6-4 before bowing to the streaking Tatjana Maria of Germany 6-3 7-6(3) in the semifinals. Keys also competed at the Berlin Ladies Open but became an early round casualty of eventual winner Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic 6-3 7-6(3).
Gabriela-Ruse only played one tournament during the grass-court warmups at the Libema Open. However, in that one event, Gabriela-Ruse defeated six players, starting from the qualifiers to up the semifinal stage, before coming up short against Elise Mertens 3-6, 6(4)-7 in the final. The Romanian enters the 2025 Wimbledon Open with a career 26-15 record on grass.
