Hot off a semifinal stint at the 2025 Mubadala Citi Open, Britain’s No.1 Emma Raducanu will play an upset-minded Elena-Gabriela Ruse of Romania in the first round of the 2025 National Bank Open.
Raducanu’s terrific run in Washington came to an end at the hands of a surging Anna Kalinskaya in the semifinal 4-6, 3-6. After topping the likes of Martha Kostyuk 7-6(4) 6-4, Noami Osaka 6-4 6-2, and Maria Sakkari 6-4 7-5, Raducanu failed to bring her A-game against Kalinskaya as she could only win 67 percent of her first serves and got broken four times in the match. Despite falling short from her first tour-level final appearance this year, Raducanu continues to put together a solid year with 21-15 record, including a 10-7 slate on hard courts.
Ruse will be trying to erase the memory of a first-round exit at Prague a week ago when she locks horns with Raducanu for the second time on Tuesday. Ruse will also aim to avenge her loss to the Brit in the first round of the 2024 Auckland Classic 6-3 4-6 7-5. The Romanian boasts a 62 percent win rate on hard court and a 10-5 slate on the surface this year.

However, the win did not come easily for the Brit, who had to battle Ruse in a grueling three-set slugfest to gut out a tough win.
