Game two of the Vancouver Canucks series against the Edmonton Oilers will take place on Friday with the Canucks leading the series. A strong end to the regular season saw the Canucks pick up the Pacific Division crown and home-ice advantage for at least the first two rounds of the postseason. They failed to capitalize on that against the Nashville Predators, losing two of three on home ice but got the job done at Bridgestone Arena. Unbeaten against the Oilers in the regular season, they will be the happier of the teams here, especially with the nerves of their opening game out of the way. They showed great grit and determination to overcome a 1-4 deficit with three minutes of the second period to play in game one which will have given them a huge confidence boost. Conor Garland picked the perfect time to score his first of the playoffs with the winner.
The Oilers were rarely troubled by the Los Angeles Kings in their first-round matchup, a team that they have had the better of in each of the last three postseasons. There were plenty of goals in both the regular season and in the Kings series from the Oilers, pushing themselves into 4th in goals scored come the end of the regular season. Where they struggled down the stretch, however, was on the road and while they won both games in Los Angeles in their opening series, no team in the playoffs won fewer games at home this season than the Kings so it was not a strength of that franchise. They will be bitterly disappointed to have let 2-0 and 4-1 leads slip in game one so it will be interesting to see how they can respond now.
