The Edmonton Oilers (57-30-7 SU, 41-53 ATS) open the Western Conference Finals against the Dallas Stars (60-25-10 SU, 42-53 ATS). The Stars present an entirely different challenge than the Vancouver Canucks, as they’re both healthy and have been here before. Last year, Dallas fell in the Western finals to Vegas, and the Stars are eager to go a step or two further this time.
The key question for Edmonton is whether the Oilers’ defensive improvement had more to do with themselves or with Vancouver running out of gas. Stuart Skinner looked good in Game 6 and Game 7, but he also didn’t face many shots in the final two games of the series. The Canucks might have faded under the pressure of trying to beat the Oilers; the Stars will not.

For Edmonton to win this series, it must do two main things. It must find an answer for Dallas goaltender Jake Oettinger, and it must slow down the Dallas power play. The Stars converted on 24.2% of their chances with the man advantage in the regular season, and they’ve been even better in the playoffs, hitting on 29%.
Edmonton has the strongest power play of anyone, but that didn’t help Colorado in the previous round. The Avalanche play a similar style to the Oilers, but they couldn’t generate anywhere near enough offense to get past Oettinger and the Stars’ defense. Dallas knows how to play against this kind of hockey and does it well. That’s a bad combination for the Oilers in the series opener, so our prediction for Edmonton vs. Dallas is for the Stars to win.
