Diana Shnaider of Russia goes head-to-head with Moyuka Uchijima of Japan in the first round of the ladies’ singles tournament at the 2025 Wimbledon Open on Monday.
Shnaider jumps into the Wimbledon Open with three wins during her grass-court warmups. The Russian reached the quarterfinal of her first grass-court tournament at Queens, where she defeated Magdalena Frech 6-4, 6-1 and Katie Boulter 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 before losing to Madison Keys 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 8. Shnaider also defeated Donna Vekic 6-2 6-4 in the first round of the Berlin Ladies Open and then lost in the next round to eventual winner Marketa Vondrousova in three sets, 6-3 6-7(3) 6-3. At her last warmup event at Bad Homburg, Shnaider failed to defend her crown following a loss to Vekic, the runner-up in last year’s final, 3-6, 3-6.
Uchijima is on a three-match losing streak and lost her only grass-court match before the Wimbledon Open. The Japanese dropped a 3-6, 2-6 defeat to Jodie Anna Burrage of Great Britain in the first round of the 2025 Eastbourne Open.
