The Detroit Tigers (47-50 SU, 47-50 ATS) cross into Ontario to face the Toronto Blue Jays (44-52 SU, 47-49 ATS). The Tigers are still technically in the race for a wild card spot, but they’re more likely to end up punting the season because of a weak offense and a questionable bullpen. Detroit does lead the majors in triples, but that’s about the only thing the Tigers do well at the plate.
More often than not, the starter has to do the job and and hope the bullpen doesn’t screw it up. Detroit actually has solid starting pitching, as Jack Flaherty has enjoyed a career renaissance in Michigan this season. He had a bad outing last time against the Angels, but that’s been his only real hiccup over the past two months. He hasn’t pitched since the end of June because of back tightness, so this game will show if he’s back to form.

The biggest question when betting a Blue Jays game is whether or not you can trust the bullpen. Toronto’s bullpen has been the worst in the American League, posting a 4.91 ERA on the season. Detroit’s hasn’t been any better, as evidenced by its 4.10 ERA and the fact that the Blue Jays pounded the Tigers’ relievers when the teams met at Comerica Park.
Toronto opts to go with Chris Bassitt against Flaherty, and that sets up for a good opportunity to get in and get out on the total. When the teams faced off in May, Flaherty took the loss in a 9-1 Toronto rout. But that was hardly Flaherty’s fault, as he gave up just one run in his first six innings of work and three runs overall. Toronto put the game out of reach with six runs in the final two innings. That’s the Tiger bullpen at its worst, and it’s why it’s best to play the first five. Our prediction for Detroit vs. Toronto is Under 3.5 Runs First Five Innings.
