The Kansas City Royals and the Detroit Tigers are all set for their final series beginning Friday at Kauffman Stadium. Kansas City kicks off a new series as -123 home favorites against the Tigers, who have lost their last four assignments.

The Royals are in the thick of a frantic race for one of the three wild-card spots up for grabs in the American League. At 69-65, Kansas City is trailing the 72-62 Seattle Mariners, the current holder of the third and final wild card spot, by three games with still plenty of baseball left to play over the next three weeks. The Royals’ offense has experienced an uptick in production over their last five games, averaging 5.3 runs per game on a .250 batting average. This season, the Royals have averaged only 3.9 runs per game, making them one of the worst offensive teams in the MLB.

The Tigers have absorbed four consecutive losses, including a sweep at the hands of the Athletics in the previous series. Although they are still the top team in the AL Central with a 78-57 record, Detroit must stop the bleeding sooner rather than later because, if they don’t, they could lose an outright spot in the divisional playoffs and end up in the wild card game, which is a scenario every division leader would want to avoid.
