Deportivo Toluca enter this Leagues Cup clash in strong form, riding the momentum of their Liga MX Clausura 2025 championship. On Tuesday, the Diablos Rojos showed their resilience by coming back from a 2-0 deficit to draw 2-2 against the Columbus Crew before winning a penalty shootout 4-2. Toluca’s never-say-die attitude was on full display as they snatched two second-half goals in Columbus, extending an unbeaten streak in Leagues Cup Phase One matches.
In domestic play, Toluca have been formidable as well – they ended a 15-year title drought with the Clausura title in May and carried that confidence into the new season. By contrast, CF Montréal have struggled in MLS this year, sitting at the bottom of the Eastern Conference as of the Leagues Cup break.
However, Montréal managed a morale-boosting result in their tournament opener on Tuesday: a 1-1 draw against a star-studded Club León, followed by a dramatic 7-6 win on penalties at Stade Saputo. Interim coach Marco Donadel hailed it as one of their best performances of 2025, as the Quebec side showed it can compete with top Mexican opposition despite a difficult league campaign (only four wins so far).
Recent results suggest a contrast in momentum: Toluca are unbeaten in several games and boast three wins in their last four across all competitions, while Montréal had only one victory in six MLS matches leading up to Leagues Cup. Yet Montréal’s shootout upset of León hints at improvement, with three of their four league wins coming in the past two months.
This Phase One meeting is being held at a neutral venue (Sports Illustrated Stadium in New Jersey), which levels the playing field slightly. Even so, Toluca’s high-powered offense will test a Montréal defense that has been leaky in MLS (over 35 goals conceded in 2025 so far).

He’s paired with Mexican international Alexis Vega who provides creativity and a goal threat from the sideline – Vega netted in Toluca’s Clausura title clincher and remains a focal point after a loan stint with Guadalajara. Central playmaker Marcel Ruiz, a 24-year-old contender for Mexico’s senior team, controls the midfield and has the vision to break down bottlenecks.
Across the back line, World Cup veteran Jesús Gallardo plies the left sideline and center-back Jesús Angulo provides experience and stability. In goal, Luis García comes off an heroic shootout appearance in Columbus having saved a late penalty kick in regulation and two spot-kicks in the tiebreaker.
For CF Montréal, the focal point of late has been forward Prince Owusu. The German-Ghanaian forward has caught fire with 10 goals in his last 10 games across all competitions. Owusu tallied the game-winner against León with his equalizer goal coming in the 62nd minute extending a hot run that has essentially single-handedly kept CF Montréal’s attack afloat. He’ll need assistance in this game from the services of attacking midfielder Bryce Duke and winger Lassi Lappalainen, who are capable of creating chances if given the space.
Toluca’s quality and form make them favorites in this matchup. Montréal showed fight in the opener, but Toluca’s depth in attack and championship pedigree should carry the day.
