Daniil Medvedev of Russia will attempt to dethrone last year’s champion Alexei Popyrin of Australia as early as the third round of the 2025 Canadian Open on Thursday.
Medvedev secured his spot in the round of 32 with a testy win over Dalibor Svrcina of Czech Republic 7-6(3) 6-4. Medvedev leaned on his experience to edge Svrcina in the first-set tiebreaker before hitting the gas pedal in the crucial point of the second set. The former world’s No.1 finished with 23 first-serve points and five breakpoint conversions.
Popyrin’s title defense is off to a good start as he swept Canadian Nicolas Arseneault. Popyrin, who also snapped a three-match slump with the victory, won all his serves by collecting 35 points off the first serves and 20 points off the second. He also posted 10 aces and broke once.
