Daniel Evans of the Great Britain will go for a place in the quarterfinal of the HSBC Championships in Queens against another American, Brandon Nakashima, on Wednesday.
Evans picked up his fourth win in this year’s grass-court season, topping Frances Tiafoe of the United States 7-5 6-2 to secure his first top-20 win in two years. Evans, who had also racked up three wins before falling to Ugo Humbert 7-5 6-3 a week ago, owns a 97-69 record on grass and has been to the third round of the Wimbledon Open three times.
Nakashima punched his ticket to the second round with a tough 6-7(10) 7-6(5) 6-4 victory over big-serving Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard of France. Nakashima found a way to neutralize Perricard’s booming serves, scoring twice out of 11 breakpoint chances. Nakashima is eyeing his second grass-court quarterfinal after making it in the final 8 at Stuttgart.
