Coming off her biggest win in a Grand Slam event, Alexandra Eala of the Philippines will try to carry over her momentum into her second-round clash with Cristina Bucsa of Spain at the 2025 US Open on Wednesday.
Eala made history by becoming the first Filipino to win a Grand Slam main draw match following a gutsy 6-3 2-6 7-6(11) win over No.14 seed Clara Tauson of Denmark on Sunday. Ranked 75th in the world, Eala demonstrated exceptional mental fortitude to rally from a 1-5 deficit and outlast Tauson in a nail-biting tiebreaker in the third set. Eala conceded five service breaks, but she also managed to take back five breakpoints, including two in the final set, to hack out easily the most electrifying win on the first day of the US Open main draw.
Meanwhile, Bucsa breezed through Claire Liu 6-2 6-1 to book her spot in the second round of the 2025 US Open. The Spaniard seized control from the get-go by imposing her will on the serves and breaking her opponents’ spirit with impeccable defense. Bucsa held all her serves and finished with five breakpoints, highlighting her all-around dominance against the American.
