Coco Gauff will be in action for the first time in Rome on Friday, taking on a promising young player from Canada, Victoria Mboko, in the second round of the 2025 Italian Open.
Gauff finally shook off her struggles in big tournaments this year, as the former US Open winner rattled off five signature wins to book her first final appearance since winning the United Cup with Team USA in early January. Gauff eventually lost to Aryna Sabalenka 6-3 7-6(3), but the campaign has given her something to build on as she prepares for the second Grand Slam of the year at Roland Garros.
Meanwhile, Mboko is steadily building her credentials as the next big tennis star out of Canada, having already won five minor tournaments this year. In Rome, Mboko has racked up three straight wins, including a 6-2 6-3 win over Arianna Zucchini in the first round.

Coco Gauff is the hands-down favorite to win this match, but I am intrigued by the 18-year-old Victoria Mboko and her enormous potential. Mboko has beaten a couple of legit WTA campaigners, Kamila Rakhimova 4-6 6-1 6-1 and Camila Bucsa 6-3 6-2, to earn her spot in the main draw of the Italian Open. I think that alone shows how good this kid is. This match against a household name like Gauff could be Mboko’s formal introduction to a wider tennis audience, and I believe the Canadian will not blow this opportunity to impress.
