Emma Raducanu of Great Britain eyes another quarterfinal stint at the WTA 1000 level this season on Monday against Coco Gauff of the United States in the round-of-16 of the 2025 Italian Open.
Raducanu powered back from a set down to beat Veronika Kudermetova of Russia 5-7 6-0 6-1. The Brit, who surpassed her second-round finish in Madrid with the win on Sunday, will have a chance to reach a second quarterfinal of a WTA 1000 event if she can pull the rug under Coco Gauff, the current world’s No.4.
After surviving an upset bid from Canadian teenager Victoria Mboko 3-6 6-2 6-1, Gauff delivered a crisper performance on Sunday as she swept Magda Linette 7-5 6-3. Gauff gutted out the win behind 32 first-serve points and 4 breakpoint conversions. Gauff has improved her clay-court record to 8-2.

Emma Raducanu’s run at the 2025 Italian Open is an encouraging sign that the former US Open winner is steadily regaining her top-10 form. Unfortunately, I expect her journey in Rome to end at the hands of Gauff, who is 8-2 on clay this year. Gauff may have had a rough start this year, but she has been on a roll recently, placing runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka in the Madrid final. Raducanu’s three victories in Rome are impressive, but she has only won 1 out of the 7 times she played a top-5 player. In short, Raducanu will need a superhuman effort to beat Gauff on Monday, which I don’t think she’s capable of at the moment.
