There's an all Italian affair due to unfold at the French venue of Roland Garros on Thursday, with Flavio Cobolli taking on Matteo Arnaldi in a match between two players separated by only ten places in the ATP Rankings. 23-year-old Cobolli comes into this match against his slightly older compatriot in hot form having not only breezed through the first round with a straight-set victory, but also having won the clay-court event in Hamburg last week, beating Andrey Rublev in the final. Such form suggests that he could easily go deep at this Grand Slam.
Cobolli is not only one who can tussle on clay. Like many Italians, Arnaldi is very capable of this surface, as he proved by eventually grinding down Felix Auger-Aliassime in the first round, winning despite being two sets down. That was a fantastic win, but how much will that have taken out of the 24-year-old? Has he recovered in time to get the better of a hugely in-form player who had an easy time of things during the first round? We'll soon find out.
