Ben Shelton of the United States guns for a seat in the quarterfinals of the 2025 Canadian Open against Flavio Cobolli of Italy on Sunday.
Shelton survived a grueling battle with compatriot Brandon Nakashima 6-7(8) 6-2 7-6(5) to keep his title hopes alive in Toronto. The American fired 19 aces and won 81 percent of his first serves to outlast Nakashima, the 25th seed in the tourney. With the victory, Shelton will have another chance to advance to his third straight quarterfinals after also making the last eight of the 2025 Wimbledon and Washington Open.
Cobolli also barged into the round of 16 with a 6-2 4-6 6-3 win over Fabian Marozsan of Hungary. Cobolli , who also escaped with a three-set victory over Alexis Galarneau of Canada 6-4 5-7 6-4, dug deep from his bag of tricks to get the better of Marozsan. He scored 32 points off the first serves and 23 more off the second while breaking Marozsan five times.
