The New York Mets will try to bounce back when they host the Cleveland Guardians after losing in extra innings yesterday, 7-6 F/10. First Pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. EST. After heading into the tenth inning with the game tied at 5-5, the Guardians took the lead with a pair of runs in the top half of the inning. The Mets plated one run in the bottom half of the inning but were unable to get a second across to tie the game up again.
New York will turn to Clayton Holmes to start the day on the mound. Holmes is 9-6 this season in 22 starts with a 3.45 ERA, 1.32 WHIP, and .247 OBA. He’s pitched well at home, going 4-2 in 10 starts with a 3.49 ERA and a .203 OBA. However, in his last home start (July 19 vs. Reds), he only lasted 5 1/3 innings and gave up six hits, five runs (four earned), and struck out three while walking two. As for Cleveland, the Guardians will hand the ball to Logan Allen to start the day. Allen is 7-9 in 21 appearances with a 4.06 ERA, 1.36 WHIP, and .261 OBA. He’s gone 3-2 in nine road starts with a 4.06 ERA and .255 OBA. In his last road start (July 11 vs. White Sox), he pitched six innings, gave up one hit (home run), and two earned runs along with two walks and five strikeouts.

As much as I’d like to think the Mets will bounce back today, I can’t say with confidence that they will. Holmes has been the better pitcher over the course of the season, but has not played nearly as well of late (4.91 ERA in July). Allen, on the other hand, had a 3.52 ERA across five starts in the same month. Both teams hit well yesterday, so I’ve got to think there is a distinct possibility that is the case today, and either team could win a tight one. But I do like the Guardians, so…
