For the White Sox, who lost 121 games in 2024, the start of 2025 is already off to a discouraging start. Their record through the first 10 games of the new season is 2-8, and even Smith's no-hitter until the sixth inning didn't help, as the White Sox offense also had a poor night, allowing just three hits.
Finally, Clevinger, out of control, couldn't hold a scoreless run in the bottom of the ninth, and the Guardians took the first game of the series against the White Sox with a bases-loaded walk that resulted in a walk-off. This was the first time a 1-0 game has been resolved this way in MLB since 2009.
For the Guardians, Santana's hit reached 1.800, and Clase once again showed his prowess as a reliever, holding a scoreless run in the ninth inning, with Luis Robert left on third after reaching base on an error. The dominant closer earned his second win of the season.
The White Sox starter in Game 2 will be Sean Burke, who had a solid Opening Day in Chicago, pitching six innings without allowing an ER, but then struggled at Target Field against the Twins, allowing six ERs in 4.1 IP.
