The Houston Astros and Chicago Cubs will meet today at Daikin Park in an interleague clash that sees two playoff hopefuls from opposite leagues trying to build momentum as the season approaches its midpoint.
The Chicago Cubs hold a 48-33 record after finishing a four-game set against the Cardinals with a split, posting results of 2-8, 7-8, 8-0, and 3-0. They'll continue their road trip on Friday, where they've been decent but not dominant, sitting four games over .500 away from home.
Before facing St. Louis, the Cubs dropped two of three games to the Mariners and split a brief two-game series with the Brewers. They've gone 3-3 over their last six contests and currently lead the NL Central.
Meanwhile, the Houston Astros also sit at 48-33 following a sweep of the Phillies. In the third game of that series, they gave up a tying run in the eighth but answered with a go-ahead score in the bottom half to seal the win.
Leading into that matchup, Houston took two of three from the Angels and split a four-game series with the Athletics. The Astros come into this weekend riding a four-game win streak and sit atop the AL West standings.

Despite that outing, he’s shown promise in three of his four starts, giving up two or fewer runs in those games. So far this season, Walter holds a 3.80 ERA, a 1.10 WHIP, and a 0-1 record across 23.1 innings. He faced the Cubs once before, giving up two runs in two innings.
For Chicago, Cade Horton gets the call. The right-hander had a rough outing his last time out but has otherwise impressed in his first MLB season. He owns a 3.48 ERA for the month and a 3.73 ERA with a 1.29 WHIP and a 3-1 record over 41 innings overall. Friday will mark his first career appearance against the Astros.
This game leans Houston’s way, especially given their home-field advantage and pitching matchup. Valdez is the more reliable starter, and the Astros lineup has more firepower top to bottom.
