The Charlotte 49ers will head out onto the road for the first time this season when they head down to southern Florida to take on the USF Bulls at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, FL. Gametime for this American Athletic Conference opener for both teams is set to kick off at 7 p.m. EST on Friday, Oct. 3.
Charlotte will certainly have its hands full facing a USF team that opened the season against three ranked teams, beating two of them. The Bulls dominated No. 25 Boise State in their season opener, 34-7, before winning a close one against No. 13 Florida, 18-16. But the following week saw them come back down to Earth after getting manhandled by Miami, 49-12. They dominated South Carolina State 63-14 before last week’s bye. The Bulls are not exceptional on either side of the ball, but good on both, ranked No. 55 in offensive (31.8 ppg) and defensive (21.5 ppg allowed) scoring. As for the 49ers, Charlotte opened the season with a four-game homestand and went 1-3 while scoring 31 total points in all three losses. They struggle to run the ball, averaging 88.3 yards per game, but aren’t bad at passing it (258.3 yards per game). The 49ers are scoring 18.3 ppg while allowing 29.3.

South Florida is not a great team like Miami, but they are a solid, good overall team without a glaring, easy-to-exploit weakness. At least not one that a team like Charlotte could take advantage of. Charlotte ranks amongst the lower third of college football teams in many significant categories, and over No. 100 in quite a few. They have some promising players on both sides of the ball, but not enough to be competitive vs. USF.
