Host nation Canada got off to a strong start in the Canada Shield, or Four Nations Tournament, this weekend by comfortably defeating Ukraine 4-2 at Toronto’s BMO Field. Despite being dominated in possession (Ukraine held 63% possession), the Canadian team was very efficient, thanks in large part to two key players: former LOSC striker Jonathan David, who scored a hat-trick, and Villarreal midfielder Tajon Buchanan, who contributed both a goal and an assist. This marks Canada’s fifth win in six matches, having previously beaten Panama (2-1), Suriname (0-1 and 3-0), and the USA (2-1) on March 23.
Defending African champions Ivory Coast disappointed in their tournament opener, suffering a surprising 1-0 loss to New Zealand (goal by Just) Sunday at BMO Field in Toronto. The coach made numerous lineup changes, which did not pay off for the Elephants despite clear dominance (72% possession and 13 shots to 2). This is a very disappointing result against the world’s 95th-ranked team, especially as the African side faces doubts ahead of a crucial match against Gabon in the World Cup qualifiers just three months away. Having lost four of their last nine games, Ivory Coast has now suffered their second defeat in four matches after a heavy 3-0 loss to Burkina Faso in late December.

Our Canada vs Côte d'Ivoire Prediction
For the first-ever meeting between these two teams, Canada and Ivory Coast will both be eager to claim victory. The Canucks, playing on home turf, can rely on the in-form Jonathan David, who netted a hat-trick in their opening match, to overcome the Elephants. Ivory Coast already looks shaken after their surprising 0-1 loss to New Zealand. Having recently defeated the USA (2-1) at the end of March, Canada is aiming for a third consecutive win that would virtually secure their triumph in this Four Nations Tournament.
