by Lou Aguila in ATP Cincinnati Open Picks
Former US Open runner-up Kei Nishikori kicks off his North American hard-court season against Camilo Ugo Carabelli of Argentina in the first round of the 2025 Cincinnati Open.
Nishikori is set to play his first match in months after an undisclosed injury forced him to miss several marquee events on the tennis calendar, including the French Open and Wimbledon. At 35, Nishikori will attempt to fend off father time once more as he aims for strong results on the hard court, particularly at the Cincinnati Open, where he had a couple of round-of-32 appearances in the past.
Carabelli seeks to earn his first win in the North American hard-court swing when he faces the former world’s No.4 on Friday. Carabelli lost to Roberto Carlos Baena 4-6, 1-4 ret. in the first round of the 2025 Canadian Open, sending his 2025 hard-court record to 3-4 and 2025 ATP season record to 30-21.

Our Camilo Ugo Carabelli vs Kei Nishikori Prediction
Fearless Forecast: Kei Nishikori wins first match in months.
Kei Nishikori is my pick to win against Camilo Ugo Carabelli because I think he’s still a better hard-court player than the Argentine despite his age and inactivity.
Apart from an outstanding 67.9 percent win rate, Nishikori boasts a solid 9-5 record on the surface this year. He also made it to the semifinal of the Phoenix Challenger in March, where he scooped a win over Luca Nardi and Flavio Cobolli before falling to the prodigious Brazilian Joao Fonseca in the final four, 3-6, 3-6.
As for Carabelli, he is only 9-14 against the top 100 players and only 3-4 on the hard court this year. The Argentine isn’t a fan of the hard-court, having only played 66 games on the surface in his career.
Our betting prediction for the Kei Nishikori vs. Camillo Ugo Carabelli: Kei Nishikori -3.5 Games.
