Brazil and Japan will face off in the round of 16 of the World Cup. Going in, many people would pick Brazil as the clear favorite. But Japan has shown time and again that it can give the big teams a run for their money. For example, they knocked Germany out of the previous World Cup and also made a strong impression in the lead-up to the tournament in North America.
In Brazil, pessimism surrounding the national team has prevailed for quite some time. After all, it’s been a long time since the team struggled so much to qualify. They secured their World Cup berth by finishing in fifth place.
But so far in the World Cup, they’ve made a much better impression. At the same time, Morocco was their only real test so far. Expectations for the national team in Brazil have rarely been this low. But perhaps that will take some of the pressure off the players and ultimately lead to better performances.
The two countries faced off not too long ago. Japan impressed by winning 3-2 at Ajinomoto Stadium in Tokyo. While that was a friendly match, it once again shows that Japan is a team to be reckoned with.

Brazil - Japan: Form Analysis

The Brazilians had a mostly smooth group stage. That being said, this certainly isn't the Brazilian powerhouse team World Cup fans are used to seeing. Against their toughest opponent in the group stage, Brazil drew 1-1 against a Moroccan team that looked poised to take the 3 points.
In the following match, the difference in class determined the final score. Brazil defeated Haiti 3-0 and then beat Scotland by the same score.
Japan has not lost in 10 consecutive matches.
Japan started with a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands thanks to a strong finish to the match. The Blue Samurai then recorded a resounding 0-4 victory over a weak Tunisia.
In their final match, Japan still had a chance to finish first in the group. But they ultimately settled for a draw against Sweden.

Brazil & Japan Squad Analysis
Up front, Brazil’s offense revolves around two players who have accounted for all seven goals. Vinícius Júnior is, of course, the star player with four goals and one assist. Before the World Cup, he had scored just nine times in 49 international matches.
Matheus Cunha, with his 3 goals, is also very important to the Brazilians and seems unlikely to lose his spot. Bruno Guimarães, incidentally, is just as important because of the work he does in midfield. On top of that, he has 3 assists to his credit.
Vinícius Júnior and Matheus Cunha scored all of Brazil’s goals in this World Cup.
Neymar took the field against Scotland and played for 15 minutes, his first minutes of action since May 17. There is still no clarity regarding Raphinha’s availability.
Ayase Ueda made a name for himself in Europe during his time with Cercle Brugge and Feyenoord. For Japan, the Eredivisie’s top scorer is also a key player. He found the net twice against Tunisia. In that match, he also provided an assist.
Two other Japanese players have been directly involved in two goals at this World Cup. Daichi Kamada is a defensive midfielder who plays for Crystal Palace. He has been invaluable to Japan’s offense, scoring a goal against both the Netherlands and the lone goal against Sweden. Keito Nakamura distinguished himself with a goal against the Netherlands and an assist against Tunisia.

Our Brazil vs Japan Prediction
Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil isn’t as dynamic as the team’s reputation might suggest. Their playing style is quite conservative, and the head coach is hoping to score on the counterattack. On the other side, Japan applies high pressure at times, but generally plays a cautious style as well. Neither team tends to concede many goals. We think it will be a tactical, cagey battle, so we're looking at the under in this crucial knockout stage match.
Our prediction for Brazil vs Japan is: Under 2.5 goals.
Brazil vs Japan - Other Interesting Picks
Draw
Given the solid defenses of both teams, there’s a good chance they’ll keep each other in check for a long time. Brazil is the favorite to win. But we think Japan has a good chance of giving their opponent a hard time for a long time and forcing at least extra time.
Our prediction for Brazil vs. Japan is: a draw.
