Two Eastern Conference teams that sit near the middle of their divisions will face off on Saturday afternoon in the Capital One Arena. The Washington Capitals (33-27-7) will defend their home ice against the visiting Boston Bruins (36-23-6). These teams met just a week prior in Boston. There, the Bruins got the best of the Capitals and grabbed a 3-1 victory. After a 1-1 first period, the teams went scoreless in the 2nd. Boston was able to get back on track in the 3rd behind a goal from Viktor Arvidsson and then an empty-netter to seal the game from Elias Lindholm.
Since that last meeting, the Bruins have gone on to lose 2 of their next 3 games. In the losses, the netminding was an issue. In the 1st loss to Pittsburgh, Joonas Korpisalo allowed 5 goals on 40 shots. They then went back to Jeremy Swayman, who picked up the win over Washington, and he was able to stop 15 of the 16 shots he faced against LA, where the Bruins picked up the win. However, he struggled against San Jose on Thursday night and allowed 4 goals on 28 shots in a loss. He is slated to get the start again here against Washington.
The Capitals, they have won 2 of their last 3 since the loss to Boston. They put up 7 goals against Calgary to get the 1st win, but dropped the next one to Philly by the score of 4-1. They bounced back Thursday night and won a hard-fought defensive battle against Buffalo 2-1. Jakob Chychrun was the hero, scoring the game-winning goal in the waning minutes of the game.
Charlie Lingren was in the net for the Capitals in their last win, but that was his best performance of the season. He will need to be just as sharp here in the rematch against Boston for the Capitals to pick up the home win.
