Although Bologna closed out the previous Serie A season on a winning streak, it was only enough for them to finish 9th, and they secured their second European competition in two consecutive seasons thanks to winning the Coppa Italia the previous season. However, Bologna has struggled to secure victories this season; in fact, they haven't won twice in a row so far this season. They were snatched away from a last-minute victory this weekend when Lecce's Camarda scored a late goal. This was worrying, given that Bologna were the -144 favorites to win that match.
In the Europa League, Bologna lost again to Aston Villa; last season they had also lost to the Premier League side, but in the Champions League. With a goal from McGinn, Bologna had been trailing the entire match from the 13th minute onwards; they were saved from a 2-0 deficit when Watkins missed a penalty.
Bundesliga rivals Freiburg, on the other hand, have had a successful start to the season; they are unbeaten in their last four matches, including a 2-1 victory with goals from Osterhage and Eggestein against Swiss side Basel to start the Bundesliga season with a winning start.
