Ben Shelton of the United States locks horns with compatriot Mackenzie McDonald in the second round of the 2025 Mubadala Citi Open on Tuesday in Washington D.C.
Now ranked No.8 in the world, Shelton aims to sustain his ascend in the world rankings by collecting more points at the upcoming hard-court tournaments, including the final major event of the year – the US Open – which will start in late August. Shelton, a former US and Australian Open semifinalist, is widely expected to do well in these events primarily because of his reputation as a hard-court expert, backed by 63.6 percent win rate on the surface.
McDonald advanced to the second round of the 2025 Washington Open with a breezy win over Colton Smith 6-4 6-1. McDonald busted out a late flurry to win the last three games of the first set. He sustained his terrific form in the second frame, holding all his four serves while capturing two more breakpoints to secure the win. McDonald raised his 2025 hard-court record to 11-6 and overall record this year to 23-17.

Our Ben Shelton vs Mackenzie Mcdonald Prediction
Why should you pick Ben Shelton to cover -4.5 games? I am all in on Shelton to score an emphatic win in his first hard-court match in months. Shelton will always be a contender in hard-court tournaments because the court conditions suit well with his aggressive style of play, which comes with booming serves and blistering forehands. McDonald owns an 11-6 record in hard-court matches this year, but most of his wins have come from the Challenger and ITF levels. I expect McDonald, 0-2 against top-10 players in 2025, to wilt in the face of relentless pressure from Shelton, who, by the way, is a two-time semifinalist in hard-court Grand Slam events.
Our betting prediction for Mackenzie McDonald vs. Ben Shelton: Ben Shelton -4.5 games.
