Ben Shelton of the United States will go head-to-head with another American rising star, Learner Tien, in an intriguing second-round clash at the 2025 Mallorca Championship.
Shelton arrived in Mallorca seeking an end to his losing streak and to rediscover his competitive fire ahead of the Wimbledon Open. Shelton opened his grass-court season on a high note after reaching the semis of the Boss Stuttgart Open, where he came several points close to upsetting world No.3 Alexander Zverev 7-6(8) 7-6(1). However, the slump carried over into the next tournament, as Shelton fell prey to Arthur Rinderkench of France, 6(5)-7, 6(4)-7.
Tien collected only his second grass-court win of his career after topping 17-year-old Justin Engel of Germany 6-4, 6-4. After falling to Brandon Nakashima in the second round at Stuttgart and Nicolas Jarry in Halle, the American refused to go down for the third straight time as he fired 32 first-serve points and 8 aces while breaking the teenager twice en route to a straight-set victory.
