It's kickoff time for the Spanish Super Cup semifinals. This Wednesday, FC Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao will face off at King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah for a spot in the final. Winners of two of the last three editions of this tournament, Barça are once again entering the tournament with high ambitions. Well established at the top of La Liga, the Blaugrana have been shining for several weeks. Hansi Flick's team has been successful on all fronts. They intend to continue their momentum, as they have the opportunity to win their first trophy of 2026.
For its part, Athletic Bilbao is not at its best this season. The Basque club was expected to be fighting for a Champions League spot in this edition of La Liga. However, it is only in 8th place in the standings and already 14 points behind the top four. Ernesto Valverde's men have also struggled to win in recent weeks. They are therefore not approaching the Spanish Super Cup with much confidence. It is difficult to imagine them defying the odds in this first semifinal of the tournament.

Barcelona - Athletic Bilbao: Form Analysis
In recent weeks, FC Barcelona has been unstoppable. The team has won eight consecutive games in all competitions. Having won its last nine La Liga matches, Barça sits comfortably at the top of the table, four points ahead of Real Madrid (2nd).
It has qualified for the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey and has not yet had its final say in the race to finish in the top eight of the Champions League group stage. Fresh from winning the derby against Espanyol Barcelona (0-2), Hansi Flick's team is brimming with confidence as it enters the Spanish Super Cup.
FC Barcelona has just racked up eight consecutive wins in all competitions.
The same cannot be said for Athletic Bilbao. The Basque club is far from playing a leading role in this season's La Liga. It is only in 8th place in the standings, 14 points behind the top 4. It has taken only one point from its previous three league games.
Although Ernesto Valverde's men scraped through to the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey, they are struggling in the Champions League group stage. They have won only once in six Champions League games and are currently not in the top 24. It will be difficult to regain confidence on Wednesday evening.

Barcelona & Athletic Bilbao Squad Analysis
For this first leg of the Spanish Super Cup semi-finals, FC Barcelona will still be without Ronald Araujo, Andreas Christensen, and Gavi. On the bright side, Hansi Flick saw the return of Pedri and Dani Olmo in last weekend's derby against Espanyol Barcelona.
Joan Garcia shone in goal during the derby. Barça's last line of defense put in a stellar performance on the pitch of his former club. He wasn't the only one to contribute to the Blaugrana's success. Coming on as a substitute, Fermin Lopez provided two assists. With Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Marcus Rashford, Ferran Torres and Robert Lewandowski, the Catalan club has plenty of other weapons at its disposal.
Pedri and Dani Olmo made their return to FC Barcelona last weekend.
As for Athletic Bilbao, Yeray Alvarez, Unai Egiluz, Aymeric Laporte, and Benat Prados Diaz are still unavailable. One thing is certain: the Basque club will need a robust performance from Unai Simon to defy the odds on Wednesday. However, the Spanish goalkeeper has failed to keep a clean sheet in his last three games.
Dani Vivian and Aitor Paredes are also expected to start in central defense. Up front, Nico Williams will be one to watch closely. The player, who was long rumored to be close to signing with Barça last summer, has not scored since November 29. He is keen to kick off his 2026 season with a bang.
