If you see one college basketball game this season, it needs to be Saturday’s historic matchup between No. 1 Auburn and No. 2 Alabama. Tipoff for the game is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET on Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa, AL. The No. 1 Tigers opened as 1.5-point road underdogs.
Auburn bounced back from its first conference loss of the season last Saturday (90-81 vs. Florida) with an 80-68 victory against Vanderbilt on the road. The Tigers got off to a fast start against the Commodores, scoring the first 15 points of the game. But Vanderbilt was able to pull within a basket by halftime, 34-32. The Commodores briefly took the lead in the second half, 49-48, but Auburn responded with a 12-2 run to take control of the game. Alabama, on the other hand, will take a seven-game win streak into Saturday’s showdown after crushing Texas on Tuesday, 103-80. However, while the Bama offense has been present during the streak (80+ points in every game, 100+ in three), the defense has been lacking. The unit ranks No. 326 in scoring (78.5 points per game allowed). During the streak, five of seven opponents scored over 78.5 points.

This game is a very interesting matchup, and not just because it features the No. 1 and 2 teams in the country. Both have top-ten offenses (Alabama No. 1 and Auburn No. 9). But Alabama’s defense is not very good (No. 326), while Auburn’s is inside the top 75 in the country. Can the Tigers slow down Alabama’s offense enough to win? With how well Alabama has been playing, the Tigers' defense may not be up to the task. Had the Tigers played better against Vanderbilt, I might have leaned towards them.
But since they were not able to gain control of the game until the second half, I’ve got to go with Alabama.
