An All-American battle is about to erupt on Thursday when Ashlyn Krueger takes on world’s No.3 Jessica Pegula in the second round of the 2025 Italian Open.
After losing to Anastasia Potapova of Russia 6-7(7) 6-4 6-2 in the first round in Madrid, Krueger came out as the winner of three-set match this time around, outlasting Anna Bondar of Hungary 4-6 6-2 6-1. Krueger clawed back from a set down by winning 45 points on her first serves and capturing four key breakpoints, two of which came in the third set, to stave off Bondar’s upset bid.
Pegula will try to rediscover her winning form in Italy after failing to advance into the championship rounds of both the Stuttgart and Madrid Open. Pegula, the Charleston Open champion, lost to Ekaterina Alexandrova 0-6, 4-6 before suffering a stunner of a loss to Mayoka Uchijima of Japan 3-6 2-6 in the third round of the Madrid Open.
