On Saturday, June 7, Parisian fans will be treated to the women’s final of the French Open Grand Slam,  and it promises to be an epic showdown. The match will pit the two best players of the season against each other: Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka and American Coco Gauff.

Top seed Aryna Sabalenka has finally reached her first-ever French Open final, achieving a long-awaited breakthrough on Parisian clay. After falling short in the 2023 semifinals against Karolina Muchova and exiting in the 2024 quarterfinals to Mirra Andreeva, the 27-year-old booked her ticket to the final with a sensational win over three-time defending champion and world No. 5 Iga Swiatek.

Though the first set was tightly contested, decided in a tiebreak in Sabalenka’s favor, the match quickly shifted in her direction. She closed it out with authority, winning 7-6(7-1), 4-6, 6-0. That dominant final set should give her a serious confidence boost heading into the title match. Having lost the Australian Open final earlier this year to Madison Keys, Sabalenka will be even more motivated to leave nothing on the table and finally lift the Roland-Garros trophy. This will be her sixth Grand Slam final, she’s won three of the previous five.

Coco Gauff, meanwhile, will be looking for payback. This is a rematch of the Madrid Open final just over a month ago, where Sabalenka defeated her 6-3, 7-6(7-3). The 21-year-old American cruised through her semifinal against France’s Lois Boisson (ranked 361st in the world), wrapping up the match in just 72 minutes with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 win. Gauff has dropped only one set in six matches at Roland-Garros this year, in the quarterfinals against fellow American Madison Keys (world No. 8).

She was a finalist here in 2022 but was overpowered by Swiatek on that occasion. Now, she’ll be even more eager to take that next step and capture her first French Open title, and add a second Grand Slam to her resume after winning the US Open in 2023.
